Famco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Alpharetta Owner’s Guide

Famco chimney cap installation in Alpharetta typically runs $340-$680 for most single-flue residential caps, including removal of the failed unit, flue measurement, proper fitment, and sealing. We stock common Famco sizes on our trucks and can usually complete the job same-day if you call before noon. Most Alpharetta homeowners discover their cap has failed during a heavy rain when water starts hitting the firebox floor, or when they spot rust streaks running down the brick from a cap that’s been quietly deteriorating for two or three seasons.

Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco caps break down into a few distinct series, and knowing which you have saves a trip. The Wind Directional Cap (sometimes called the Vacu-Stack) is the most common in Alpharetta, recognizable by its rotating turbine top that spins with the wind to increase draft. These come in 8″, 10″, and 12″ flue diameters, with the 10″ version dominating homes built in the 2005-2015 window around Windward Parkway and Avalon. The Standard Galvanized Cap and Stainless Steel Cap lines use fixed hoods with mesh screening, sized by flue length and width rather than diameter. You’ll find the model stamp on the underside of the hood or on a small metal tag at the base skirt.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: Famco’s galvanized caps share bolt patterns with several aftermarket brands, but the Wind Directional series uses a proprietary base ring that doesn’t cross over cleanly. We’ve seen homeowners in the Webb Bridge Road area buy a “universal” cap that seated poorly and blew off in the spring storms that roll through north Fulton County. We source Famco caps through Haven’s buying network alongside DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco equivalents, and we’ll tell you straight when the OEM part is worth the extra cost versus when a quality aftermarket cap from our stock will outlast it. For the Wind Directional series, we almost always recommend staying with Famco proper. For standard fixed hoods, the Gelco stainless units we carry often match or exceed Famco’s gauge at a lower price point.

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Rust bleeding down the chimney face. Famco’s galvanized caps carry a zinc coating that eventually wears through, especially where acid rain and pollen residue sit on the surface. Once rust appears on the brick below, the cap’s base flange is usually corroded enough that water is getting behind it.
  • Mesh screening detached or sagging. The spark arrestor mesh on Famco caps is spot-welded at the corners. Heat cycling from gas flues in Alpharetta’s shoulder seasons fatigues these welds until the mesh drops into the flue or gaps open large enough for squirrels to push through. We pulled a nest from a chimney off Rucker Road last October where the mesh had failed two years prior.
  • Cap sitting crooked or visibly loose. The set screws or tension band that secures a Famco cap to the flue tile can back out from thermal expansion cycles. A cap that’s even slightly askew catches wind asymmetrically, which worsens the lean until it either leaks or departs entirely.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This is the symptom that drives most calls. The cap’s hood may look intact from the ground, but the seam where the hood meets the vertical skirt often separates first. Water follows the flue wall down and pools on the smoke shelf or hearth.
  • Draft problems, especially on windy days. For Wind Directional caps, the turbine bearings seize from pollen and moisture exposure. The cap then blocks airflow instead of enhancing it, and you’ll notice smoke rollout when starting a fire or poor performance from your gas insert.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Component Price Range
Famco standard galvanized cap, installed $340-$480
Famco stainless steel cap, installed $480-$620
Famco Wind Directional cap, installed $520-$680
Flue tile repair / resurfacing if needed $180-$340 additional

What drives the range: flue height and accessibility, whether the existing cap left corrosion damage on the flue tile that needs grinding and sealing, and whether we’re working from a ladder or need to set up roof jacks on a steep pitch. The price we quote in writing before work starts includes removal and disposal of the old cap, the new Famco or equivalent unit, high-temp sealant at the base, and a camera inspection of the flue top to confirm no debris or damage is hidden below. Every Famco cap installation is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and the photo record of the completed work is archived under Haven Standard Clause 4.

There’s one thing you can safely check yourself: whether the cap is merely loose. A pair of binoculars from the ground will show if it’s sitting crooked, and if you have safe roof access and a steady ladder, you can sometimes tighten the tension band or set screws. Beyond that, we recommend against owner installation. The flue tile at the top of your chimney is brittle, and an over-tightened band cracks it. An under-tightened band loses the cap in the next thunderstorm. The sealant needs to be rated for 500°F minimum, and most hardware-store caulk fails within a season. We’ve also found that homeowners who DIY often discover too late that the cap they bought doesn’t match their flue shape, oval versus round being the most common mismatch in Alpharetta’s 1990s-era construction.

Our crew carries Famco-compatible caps in 8″, 10″, and 12″ diameters on every truck, along with the transition pieces for oval flues. We’ll measure, fit, seal, and document it with photos you’ll get by text before we leave. Call (678) 679-0171 and we’ll give you a written price before we book the visit.
